Park Review- Seaworld San Diego

Park Review- Seaworld San Diego

Day: Wednesday
Date: March 12, 2014
Overall Rating: Very Good
Exhibit Rating: Excellent
Opinion: Beautiful Park.
Staff: Carrie, Kitsune and Alex

During our "Grand California Tour" we simply had to visit Seaworld San Diego. Not only had we heard it's one of the prettiest of the many Seaworld Parks but also their newest addition, Explorers Reef, was set to open very close to our visit.

History:
Seaworld San Diego is located in San Diego California, in the Mission Park area. It's about an hour and a half south of Anaheim in the far southern reaches of California. It's far enough out to be separate from other area theme parks but fully stands on it's own as one of the loveliest parks we've had the pleasure of visiting. Seaworld San Diego is the original "SeaWorld" park, founded in 1964 by four UCLA graduates. The park opened originally with only Sealions and Dolphins as their marine mammal attractions, the parks iconic"Shamu" Killer Whales didn't come to the park until 1965. "Shamu" wasn't originally captured for Seaworld but was purchased from a Seattle Aquarium.

Seaworld later added additional parks in Ohio, Florida and Texas over the coming years. They changed ownership several times over it's 50 year history, the most noted and longest owner being Anheuser-Busch who grew Seaworld into a household name.

2014 will celebrate Seaworld's 50th Anniversary which will be celebrated in all the current Seaworld parks, called "A Sea of Surprises".

Kennywood Park- Images of New Phanton's Revenge Cars

Kennywood Park- New Images of Phantom's Revenge Cars.

Today on the Facebook Page, Kennywood Connection, images surfaced of what the new cars for Phantoms Revenge will look like.

The new trains will be solid green and purple rather than a combination of the two colors. The new trains have more a "vintage" look, many are equated them to the original 'Steel Phantoms" trains. Honestly this look far more angular and retro than the original trains.

Image from RCDB, Ric Turner,1991
This image from RCDB show the original trains from Phantom, there is a rather obvious difference in the styling. I also think the new shade of green appears far closer to teal than "green".. but that's just me.

The one downside I can see, it doesn't appear that Phantom's Revenge will be getting new restraints.

Either way it's nice to see Kennywood finally getting some upgrades!

Seaworld San Diego- First Look at Explorers Reef

Seaworld San Diego- A Frist Look at Explorers Reef.

As part of Seaworld's 50th Anniversary, "A Sea of Surprises" the park in San Diego made some massive changes to their entrance plaza. While the Grand Opening of Explorers Reef isn't until March 21st, Seaworld San Diego has been opening the area slowly to guests. We where lucky enough to be invited to visit Seaworld San Diego but even more to our surprise the new area of Explorers Reef has just soft opened, much to our delight.

Banshee Watch- First Successful Test

Banshee Watch- 2/18
First Successful Test Run

Image from Kings Island's Facebook Page
 Good News for Coaster Fans,
Kings Island's newest, record breaking roller coaster, Banshee, has had it's first full and successful test run.

However, the park still isn't releasing many details about the rides testing at the moment. Simply this image and that it has successfully tested. The way it was written perhaps they had some trouble in the beginning getting things online and working properly but we can't confirm this at all.

Either way, it's excellent to see the ride in motion and getting ready for it's big premiere to the public on April 18th.  Remember, we will be present for the media event for Banshee on April 17th. So we'll have all the information, goodies, video and photos to appease you until you get the chance to ride this amazing looking coaster.

Kennywood Park- Upgrading Rides

Kennywood Park is Upgrading two of their Coasters.

Finally, some good news from Kennywood that doesn't involve a chain brand restaurant or notes on how far Parques Reunidos has let things slide.

In 2014 Kennywood will be giving upgrades to two of their roller coasters. "Phantoms Revenge" will finally be receiving new fiberglass cars, giving the coaster trains an updated look. Hopefully they'll also be replacing the woeful and mostly painful lap-bars on the ride also.

"Thunderbolt" is also getting an upgrade that isn't really an upgrade, really it's a return to the classic look of the coaster. The trains on Thunderbolt will once again have their headlights! The headlights on the iconic roller coasters cars will be working once again for the 2014 season, replaced with high powered LED's.

Update on Conneaut Lake Park

Update on the Status of Conneaut Lake Park.

Conneaut Lake Park's fate has been under the axe the last few years due to poor management by the parks board of trustees. It was announced that the park's land and attractions will be sold by sheriff's sale in September of 2014 to cover a massive debt of unpaid taxes.

The only shining light here is that I have finally confirmed, via email with the park, that they will open for the 2014 season.  The dates haven't been announced yet but it's likely to be middle or late May.

This will be your final and last chance to visit the park. You last possible chance to ride "Blue Streak" which is a classic wooden coaster, currently 76 years old. It will also be the last chance to visit the new "haunted house" the park just opened last season called "Hostile Hostel".

So start making you plans now if you wish to get in on the parks final season. Let's try to give this old friend a fond, if heart-breaking, farewell.

More Details about Universal Orlando's Hogwarts Express Emerge!

Image via Bay9 News
This past Friday, Universal Orlando finally announced more details about the Hogwarts Express attraction that's part of the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley expansion.

The train, which takes guests from the new Diagon Alley/London to Hogsmeade, will feature a different experience in each direction.

Also, important to note here, you WILL need a two park ticket to ride, no exceptions on that one. So, for anyone curious how that would work, there's your answer.

What can you expect during your trip? Once on board, the execs were careful to emphasize repeatedly: It is just like the experience of actually riding a train, albeit a magical one. Guests will be able to look out the windows and see an actual Harry Potter scene play out; and depending on where they're seated on the train, and what angle they're looking out the window, the scene will look different. Visits from your favorite characters during the trip, such as Hagrid on his flying motocycle, or Buckbeak the Hoppogriff, the Knight Bus and even a possible visit by a Dementor on the hunt.

Sound awesome? Well, there's a lot more to expect. Like, just how you get to the famous Platform 9 3/4. VP of Corporate Communications for Universal, Tom Schroder, had this to say about that,"I don't want to give it away, you have to experience it. But you'll see people... Transition through the wall, and you'll transition through the wall as you go to the platform".

You want even more? Well, good thing they spilled the beans further and have said that even the candy trolley, or at least something very similar, will be on board as well!

Now, have a look at the First Look video put out by Universal as well as few still of what's being reported as possible scenes that guests will experience while on their journey aboard the Hogwarts Express!

Idlewild Park- Replacing Mr. Rogers Neighborhood

Idlewild Park to Replace "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" in 2015.

The iconic ride of Idlewild Park, "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood of Make Believe" will be replaced in 2015. The park no longer feels that the current attraction is enough for today's children, adding in the fact the ride hasn't been up-kept very well with broken or faded animatronics, they've decided to replace the current attraction which they quietly closed at the end of 2013 season.

The good news is that it will still have some form of a Mr. Rogers theme, using the new show "Daniel Tigers Neighborhood" currently on PBS as the inspiration. Idlewild has also stated that the Trolley will still be in place at the park, using it as the main form of transpiration for the new attraction.

Currently the trolley ride is completely closed. The park currently is offering a "Meet and Greet" with Daniel Tiger but in 2015 they expect the new ride to launch into success as well as adding in a stage show involving Daniel Tiger.

Kings Island- New Show for 2014

Kings Island adds a New Show for 2014.

Coming to Kings Island in 2014 is a new "Cirque" style show. Opening on May 24th at the Kings Island Theater, the new show called "Cirque Imagine" will show off impressive acrobatics.

Not much is known about what acts are included in the new show but from the teaser video we've seen balance, acrobatics, human hoop and rollerblade bits included. The new show is fully included in your park admission and is set to last 30 minutes.

Check out the teaser video below!
